Cranberries are found on the evergreen dwarf shrubs which are widely grown on a commercial basis in the US and Canada. However, most of the cranberry juice that we buy in the shops is not just pure squeezed cranberry juice as this can be quite tart and acidic, so often the juice has other ingredients added, whether that is water, sugar or artificial sweeteners.
There is also a trend to take the acidity out of the cranberry juice by mixing it with other fruit juices such as blackcurrant or raspberry juices.
Cranberry juice is known to have a number of health benefits, in particular helping prevent and treat urinary tract infections. By drinking cranberry juice every day these can be kept at bay.
Cranberry juice has also become a staple in bars and pubs with vodka and cranberry juice being one of the most popular ways of mixing, as well as cranberry juice being used for a number of non-alcoholic and alcoholic cocktails. In addition to the taste, the bright red colour of cranberry juice can be a great addition to cocktails.
If you have a good supply of cranberries to hand then you can try making your own cranberry juice. In this way you can make it to your own taste and not only can you make cranberry juice but you could also try some of the cranberry recipes or make your own cranberry sauce.
Cranberry juice can be bought to drink as it is or else you can buy cranberry juice in a concentrated form to dilute to taste. If you prefer, you can take your dose of cranberries in the form of cranberry tablets or cranberry pills, which give you a concentrated dose of cranberries.
There is some evidence to suggest that drinking cranberry juice can help to prevent and dissolve kidney stones but as with most home remedies there is no concrete proof about this and although some doctors recommend it, others don’t see the benefits.

Benefits of Cranberry Juice
Cranberry juice is a great tasting juice which has tons of health benefits packed into it. Whether you’re looking for your daily vitamins, quick fixes, or long term health benefits, cranberry juice has something for everyone. Below are just a few reasons why we love this wonderful juice and why you should incorporate it into your everyday diet.
First let’s discuss the affect that cranberry juice has on your dental health. Cranberry juice is known to fight bacteria, which is exactly what causes plaque and can lead to gum disease. This leads us to the next benefit…
Urinary tract infections– Cranberry juice is known to fight U.T.I.’s because again it fights bacteria. The bacteria known to cause U.T.I.’s (E. coli) is unable to stick the walls of your bladder because of a component in cranberry juice and is thereby flushed out of your system putting an end to the infection.
Heart attacks– Studies have shown that cranberry juice can reduce heart attacks by as much as 35%. How can a simple fruit juice do this? Cranberry juice contains polyphenols which raise your levels of good cholestrol and lower levels of bad cholestrol.
Cancer– Cranberry juice contains antioxidants which battle free radicals in your system which are known to be a cause of cancer. It is also known to destroy other forms of bacteria which can lead to ulcers and in severe cases, stomach cancer.
Respiratory infections– Again the components in cranberry juice (called proanthocyanidins) are known to fight bacteria, some of which cause the flu. By blocking the bacteria’s ability to attach to your body’s cells it reduces your chances of getting an infection.
This is just a small sampling of the many benefits of cranberry juice. We could go on forever about this miracle fruit and its juice. Cranberry Juice and Kidney Stones
Firstly we need to say that no concrete medical studies have been carried out to determine whether drinking cranberry juice can help with kidney stones or not. Contradictory advice has come from various medical establishments as to whether or not cranberry juice and kidney stones are linked.
Another thing to note is that there are different types of kidney stones that are formed from different substances and so this fact in itself may be one of the problems about whether or not cranberry juice helps with kidney stones as it may depend on the type of kidney stone and what it is made up from as to whether or not cranberry juice can help with reducing or preventing the kidney stones from forming.
One of the most common forms of kidney stones are those made up of calcium and oxalate and although cranberry juice does increase the concentration of two substances that help to prevent these types of kidney stones, it also increases the concentration of calcium and oxalate themselves thus negating any positive effect that may be seen.
There are other less common forms of kidney stones that are helped by drinking cranberry juice however as these kidney stones are far less common, unless you know exactly what type of kidney stones you have then it might be advisable to steer clear of cranberry juice.
Other juices like orange juice have been shown to have a better effect on kidney stones than cranberry juice as it does not increase the levels of calcium or oxalate so this may be a better bet.
But really, if you have kidney stones then the best thing is to consult a medical professional so that you can get proper medical advise on which is the best way to treat kidney stones
